In 2006, Fonseca was the first company to launch a certified organic Port wine, and as such, a pioneer in the creation of the category. By the hand of winemaker David Guimaraens and his viticulture team, this is the first entirely organic Port wine to be produced in the Douro, based on the knowledge obtained through the long-term management of a plot of vineyard cultivated organically since 1992, at Quinta from Panascal, from Fonseca. This organic vineyard, planted by Bruce Guimaraens, continues to be the fundamental reference for all Fladgate Partnership viticultural practices to this day.

In 2002, Terra Prima Organic Port became a reality using grapes grown in the Douro Valley, coming from a vineyard that is grown entirely organically and actively managed by Guimaraens and his team. The last step in the development of this Port wine was to develop a superior quality organic wine brandy. Terra Prima Organic Port is certified as being made from organically grown grapes by SOCERT, the Portuguese certification body that is part of the European Ecocert certification system.
