It is the southernmost region of Portugal.

It has a very own climate: it is close to the sea, yet it also suffers the influence of the mountain (Serra Espinhaço de Cão, Caldeirão and Monchique). The sierras are very important in Algarve agriculture, because they protect the explorations of winds coming from the north. In this way, the climate is warm, dry, with reduced thermal amplitudes and with an average of 3000 hours of sunshine per year.

The increase in tourism in the Algarve has been of little benefit to viticulture. The vineyards have been replaced by hotels, tourist villages and golf courses.

In recent years, the region is receiving investments to revitalize the wine sector. Caste replanting began, wine cellars modernized and new methods of wine production were practiced.

The Algarve region has four Denominations of Origin: Lagos, Lagoa, Portimão and Tavira. However, most of the wine produced is included in the designation "regional wine of the Algarve". The traditional varieties of the region are Castelão and Negra Mole (in the red varieties) and Arinto and Syria (in the white varieties). The Syrah grape variety was one of the grape varieties used to replant the vineyards and showed total adaptability to the region's climate, so it has been extensively planted by winegrowers. The Algarve wines are characterized by being soft and quite fruity.
